Tarot vs Oracle Cards: What's the Difference?

Tarot has rules. Oracle decks make their own. Both have a place — for different things.

Tarot: a structured system

Tarot is a fixed 78-card system with consistent structure across decks: 22 Major Arcana, 56 Minor Arcana in four suits. Because the structure is shared, a reading from one tarot deck is intelligible to anyone who knows tarot. This is what gives tarot its depth.

Oracle: an open system

Oracle decks have no fixed card count, no suits, no shared rules. Each deck is its own world, designed around a theme — moon cycles, animal spirits, affirmations. They are wonderful for daily inspiration but harder to read for nuanced situations.

When to use which

  • Tarot — complex questions, layered situations, decisions.
  • Oracle — daily prompts, affirmations, simple yes-no energy checks.
  • Both — pull a tarot spread, then draw one oracle card as a final note.
